Huay Xai, sometimes spelled Houayxay, is the capital of Bokeo Province and lies on the right bank of the Mekong directly opposite the Thai town of Chiang Khong. Thanks to the Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, it has become an important international border crossing where travellers and freight move between Thailand and China along National Route R3A. The small town is also a well-known starting point for multi-day slow-boat journeys down the Mekong, calling at Pakbeng before reaching Luang Prabang. In the surrounding hill forests lies the award-winning Gibbon Experience, an ecotourism project of treehouses and kilometre-long zip lines in the Nam Kan protected area, dedicated to conserving black-crested gibbons and supporting livelihoods.
