💡 Tips

  • Renting a scooter is the most practical way to explore the famous Thakhek Loop and its numerous caves.
  • Bring a sturdy pair of shoes and a headlamp if you plan to explore the deeper, less-developed caves.
  • The town itself is quite small and walkable; stroll along the riverfront to see older colonial buildings.
  • Have cash on hand, as many small shops and rural sights on the Loop do not accept cards.
  • Be cautious of large trucks on the main highways outside town before you turn onto the Loop roads.

Thakhek is the capital of Khammouane Province in central Laos, situated on the eastern bank of the Mekong River opposite the Thai city of Nakhon Phanom. The town is notable for its well-preserved French colonial architecture, particularly centered around its main plaza, reflecting its history as an administrative hub during the colonial era. Thakhek was expanded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to facilitate trade along the Mekong, leaving behind a legacy of elegant, albeit aged, villas and public buildings. Since 2011, it has been linked to Thailand by the Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, which has significantly boosted the local economy and regional connectivity. For travelers, Thakhek is best known as the starting point for the 'Thakhek Loop,' a popular multi-day motorbike journey through the region's dramatic limestone karst landscapes. The surrounding area is home to numerous caves, most notably the massive Kong Lor Cave, which features a 7.5-kilometer underground river. Culturally, the town is anchored by Wat Sikhotabong, one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Laos with foundations dating back to the 6th century.
