Shopokov lies in the Chuy Valley about 25 kilometres west of Bishkek at around 750 metres above sea level and has roughly 8000 inhabitants. The town was originally a Russian Cossack village called Novotroitskoye, founded in 1872, which quickly grew into an important market hub for the German, Ukrainian and Russian farmers in the surrounding area. In 1967 it was renamed in honour of Djuishenkul Shopokov, a Kyrgyz soldier and Hero of the Soviet Union who fell in 1941 at the Battle of Volokolamsk near Moscow as one of the famed Twenty-Eight Panfilov Heroes. Today the local economy rests on a large wool spinning mill, a cannery, baked-goods production and poultry farms. Shopokov is also a popular residential area for commuters to Bishkek, as a modern highway links it directly to the capital while property prices remain considerably lower than in the city.
