Ata-Beyit, meaning "Grave of the Fathers," is a memorial complex located outside Bishkek dedicated to the victims of the Stalinist repressions in the 1930s. The site was secretly used to dispose of the bodies of 137 prominent Kyrgyz politicians, intellectuals, and scientists who were executed during the Great Purge in 1938. The exact location of the mass grave was not revealed until 1991. The complex was officially opened in 2000 and houses the reburied remains of these national leaders. Ata-Beyit also serves as the final resting place for the famous writer Chingiz Aitmatov, as well as the victims of the April 2010 political unrest, making it a place of profound national mourning and reflection.
