Burgan Field (Kuwait)

Weather…

The Burgan Field is the world's second-largest conventional oil field and serves as the backbone of the Kuwaiti economy. Discovered in 1938 in the southern desert, commercial production commenced in 1946 following World War II. It is the central part of the Greater Burgan complex, which also includes the Magwa and Ahmadi structures, with total estimated reserves ranging between 66 and 72 billion barrels. Geologically, the reservoir primarily consists of Cretaceous sandstone formations known for their exceptional permeability and high productivity. Production costs at Burgan are among the lowest globally due to favorable geological conditions and high natural pressure. The field suffered catastrophic damage during the 1991 Gulf War when retreating forces set fire to hundreds of wells, leading to a massive international firefighting effort. Today, the field is managed by the state-owned Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) and accounts for the majority of Kuwait's daily oil output. Continuous technological investments ensure that Burgan remains a strategic global energy resource for decades to come.
