Port of Kisumu (Kenya)

Weather…

The Port of Kisumu is situated on the shores of Lake Victoria and serves as a historical and economic hub for inland trade in East Africa. Established in 1901 with the completion of the Uganda Railway, the port was originally designed to link rail transport with shipping routes on Africa's largest lake. After a period of decline, the port underwent extensive modernization and revitalization between 2019 and 2021 to boost regional trade with Tanzania and Uganda. The upgrades included modernized quays, improved warehouses, and a deepened channel for larger vessels. A standout feature is the dry dock, the largest on the lake, which facilitates ship repair and construction. The port plays a strategic role in the lake transport of petroleum products, cereals, and construction materials. The revival of the Nakuru-Kisumu railway line has further enhanced its logistical significance as part of the Northern Corridor. Today, Kisumu once again serves as a vital bridge connecting Kenyan goods with markets in Entebbe, Mwanza, and Bukoba, driving the economic integration of the East African Community.
