The Nandi Hills represent a massive, deeply undulating highland region in western Kenya, fiercely defined by both its intense modern tea production and its profound anti-colonial history. Located at a commanding elevation averaging 2,000 meters, the region is the ancestral and spiritual heartland of the Nandi people. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the hills were the epicenter of the highly organized, massive Nandi Resistance against the encroaching British Empire and the construction of the Uganda Railway. Led by the deeply revered supreme chief, Koitalel Arap Samoei, the Nandi fought a highly effective guerrilla war for over a decade. The conflict only ended when Samoei was deceitfully assassinated under the guise of a peace truce in 1905, an event still intensely commemorated locally.

The Nandi Hills area is freely accessible. There is no entry fee, but please respect private property.
Typical hours
The area is accessible anytime, but best visited during daylight. Morning and late afternoon fog may reduce visibility.
Photography
Photography is allowed everywhere. The view from the hills is especially spectacular at sunrise and sunset.
Time needed
For a hike to the main summit and back, allow about 2-3 hours. Exploring the entire ridge requires half a day.
Combine with
Combine your visit with the Koitalel Arap Samoei Memorial near Kapsabet. The Kerio River is also worth a detour.
Getting there
The Nandi Hills are about 40 kilometers west of Eldoret. Best reached by rental car or organized tour from Eldoret.
Insider tip
Bring plenty of water and a rain poncho as weather can change quickly. Local guides offer their services at the foot of the hills.
