Mombasa Oil Refinery (KPRL) (Kenya)

Weather…

The Mombasa Oil Refinery, officially the Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited (KPRL), is a massive, historically critical industrial complex located in the Changamwe area. Commissioned in 1963, it was originally designed to process crude oil imported from the Middle East into diverse petroleum products for the entire East African region. For decades, its massive distillation columns and storage tanks formed the absolute core of the regional energy supply chain. However, plagued by crippling inefficiencies, outdated technology, and an inability to process crude profitably compared to direct imports of refined fuel, the refinery dramatically ceased operations in 2013. Today, the colossal, silent infrastructure has been repurposed exclusively as a strategic storage terminal for imported refined petroleum products.
