Established in 1926, it covers an area of approximately 1,319 square kilometers near the borders of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The region is characterized by immense biological diversity, home to over 1,300 plant species, including the famous Greig's tulip, considered the ancestor of many modern tulip varieties. The landscape is dominated by snow-capped peaks, deep gorges, such as the 500-meter-deep Aksu Canyon, and vast alpine meadows.
