Sauran Ruins (Kazakhstan)

Weather…

The ruins of Sauran are located about 45 kilometers northwest of Turkestan and were once a strategic center on the Silk Road. Sauran was famous for its impregnable walls and its advanced irrigation system, known as karez, which channeled water into the city through underground tunnels stretching for kilometers. Between the 14th and 16th centuries, Sauran served as one of the region's most important cities and, for a time, as the capital of the White Horde. The well-preserved remains of the city walls and gates offer a glimpse into its former grandeur and military significance. Historical accounts mention Sauran as a hub for trade and science, even featuring a madrasa with famous 'shaking minarets.' As trade routes shifted, the city lost its importance in the 17th century and was eventually abandoned. Today, it stands as a significant archaeological monument documenting the engineering genius of medieval Central Asian inhabitants.
