It is a prime example of the Malinké-style mosque, representing the classic Sudanese mud-brick architectural tradition. The construction of the mosque is estimated to date back to the mid-17th century, making it one of the oldest sacred buildings in the region. Its façade is characterized by numerous vertical pillars and protruding wooden stakes, giving the structure an almost fortress-like appearance. These wooden poles serve as scaffolding for craftsmen who annually renew the mud plaster on the exterior walls to prevent erosion.
