Great Mosque of Kong (Côte d’Ivoire)

Weather…

The Great Mosque of Kong is an outstanding example of Sudano-Sahelian mud architecture located in northern Côte d'Ivoire. Originally built in the 17th or 18th century, it is one of the few surviving testaments to the once-powerful Kong Empire. The structure is made from sun-dried mud bricks and is reinforced by characteristic wooden beams known as 'torons' that protrude from the façade. These beams serve both as structural support and as permanent scaffolding for the periodic replastering required after each rainy season. Despite the destruction of the city by Samory Touré in 1897, the mosque survived or was meticulously rebuilt shortly thereafter in its original style. Since 2006, the mosque has been on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. It serves as both a place of worship and a significant historical monument representing West African Islamic tradition.
