Mount Kourou is a prominent peak in western Mali, situated in the Kayes region near the border with Guinea. It is part of the Manding Mountains, characterized by spectacular sandstone cliffs and deep gorges. Reaching an elevation of approximately 870 meters above sea level, it dominates the surrounding landscape and has served as a vital landmark for caravans and travelers for centuries. Geologically, the mountain consists of Precambrian sediments that have been sculpted into bizarre shapes by erosion over millennia. The vegetation on its slopes is typical of the Sudanian savanna, while lush gallery forests flourish in the moister ravines. Historically, Mount Kourou was a center of resistance against colonial expansion and is steeped in the legends of the local Malinke people. Significant archaeological sites are found nearby, pointing to human habitation since the Stone Age. Today, the mountain attracts adventure tourists who appreciate the pristine nature and spectacular waterfalls in the area. Mount Kourou also plays a crucial role in the local water cycle, as its springs feed several streams indispensable for agriculture in the valleys. The view from the summit extends far across the plains of Bambouk, a region renowned for its gold wealth since the Middle Ages.
