Sudanese-style mosques in Kong (Côte d’Ivoire)

Weather…

The Sudanese-style mosques in Kong are outstanding examples of Sudano-Sahelian architecture in northern Ivory Coast. These mud-brick structures, characterized by wooden beams (torons) protruding from the walls, bear witness to the former power of the Kong Empire, which was a major center for trade and Islamic scholarship in the 18th century. The Great Mosque of Kong was originally built in the 17th or 18th century but was destroyed in 1897 by the troops of Samori Touré and later faithfully reconstructed in the early 20th century. The construction method is perfectly adapted to the climate: the thick earthen walls repel heat during the day and release it at night. The protruding wooden beams serve both as structural reinforcement and as permanent scaffolding for annual maintenance required after the rainy season. Since 2021, eight of these mosques across northern Ivory Coast have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. They represent the cultural exchange along trans-Saharan trade routes and the deep-seated influence of Islam in the region.
