Pantheon (Italy)

Weather…

The Pantheon is one of the best-preserved ancient Roman buildings and an architectural marvel located in Rome, Italy. Originally built by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus as a temple to all the gods of ancient Rome, it was completely rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian around 126 AD after being destroyed by fire. The Pantheon's most remarkable feature is its giant, unreinforced concrete dome with a central oculus, or 'eye', which is the only source of light. At 43.3 meters in diameter, it remains the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. In 609 AD, the Pantheon was converted into a Catholic church, Santa Maria ad Martyres, a dedication which has helped in its preservation. The building serves as the burial place for several notable Italians, including the Renaissance painter Raphael and two Italian kings. The Pantheon's portico, with its massive Corinthian granite columns and triangular pediment, conceals the revolutionary dome and circular interior from outside view, creating a dramatic transition from the classical to the innovative.
