Trapani is situated on the western coast of Sicily, uniquely positioned on a sickle-shaped peninsula that gave rise to its ancient Greek name, 'Drepanon'. Historically a vital stronghold for the Phoenicians and later the Carthaginians, the city served as a key naval base before falling to Roman rule. Its strategic location at the meeting point of the Tyrrhenian and Mediterranean Seas turned Trapani into a flourishing trade center for salt, tuna, and coral. The famous Trapani salt pans, dotted with traditional windmills, remain a testament to a centuries-old production method and are now a protected nature reserve. The historic center features a wealth of Baroque architecture, notably the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Palazzo Senatorio. The city is also renowned for the 'Procession of the Mysteries' during Holy Week, one of the oldest and longest religious events in Italy. Today, Trapani serves as the primary gateway to the Aegadian Islands and the medieval hilltop town of Erice.
