Erice is a captivating mountain town in western Sicily, perched 750 meters above sea level on the summit of Mount Erice. Overlooking the city of Trapani, it has perfectly preserved its medieval layout, with gray stone houses and intricate cobblestone alleys that make it feel suspended in time. Founded by the Elymians, Erice was famous in antiquity for its sanctuary dedicated to Venus Erycina, on whose foundations the impressive 'Castello di Venere' (Venus Castle) now stands. From its ramparts, one can enjoy panoramic views of the coastline, the Egadi Islands, and the salt pans of Trapani. Erice is also known for its unique microclimate; even in summer, the town is frequently enveloped in a thick mist, adding a mystical charm. Culinary-wise, the town is celebrated for its almond pastries and marzipan sweets, a tradition historically perfected by local nuns and still carried on today by famous pastry chefs.
