Reggio Calabria is located at the 'toe' of Italy, positioned on the Strait of Messina directly across from Sicily. Founded in the 8th century BC as the Greek colony of Rhegion, it was a pivotal center of Magna Graecia. The city's modern layout is a result of reconstruction following the catastrophic 1908 earthquake, featuring wide boulevards and a grid-like urban structure. Its premier attraction is the National Archaeological Museum of Magna Graecia, home to the famous Riace Bronzes, two Greek statues from the 5th century BC discovered in the sea in 1972. The Lungomare Falcomatà, frequently called 'the most beautiful kilometer in Italy', gives panoramic views of Mount Etna and the rare Fata Morgana optical illusion. Reggio is also the global hub for bergamot cultivation, a citrus fruit essential to the perfume industry. The city merges ancient heritage with a lively Mediterranean atmosphere and serves as a crucial transit point for ferries to Sicily.
