Temples of Agrigento (Italy)

Weather…

The Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi) in Agrigento is one of the world's most significant archaeological sites and an outstanding testament to ancient Greek civilization in Sicily. The ancient city of Akragas was founded around 580 BC and rapidly grew into one of the most powerful and wealthy cultural centers of Magna Graecia. This UNESCO World Heritage site features seven monumental Doric temples situated along a rocky ridge south of the ancient city walls. The best-preserved structure is the Temple of Concord, which owes its remarkable state of preservation to its conversion into a Christian basilica in the 6th century AD. Also noteworthy are the remains of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which was intended to be one of the largest in antiquity, and the Temple of Hera. The site seamlessly integrates grand architectural ruins with a classic Mediterranean landscape of almond and olive trees. Beyond the temples, the area encompasses necropolises, residential quarters, and a prestigious archaeological museum documenting Akragas's history from prehistory through the Roman era.
