Santa Maria al Bagno, a hamlet of Nardò, is one of the most elegant seaside resorts on the Ionian coast of Puglia. The town has a long history dating back to Roman times when it was known for its thermal baths. The skyline is dominated by the 'Quattro Colonne', the ruins of a 16th-century fortress that once protected the coast from pirate raids. Elegant Liberty-style villas line the streets, lending the village a timeless and sophisticated atmosphere. Spiaggia di Santa Maria al Bagno is located right in the heart of the town in a small bay. The sand is fine and the water so clear that you can see right to the bottom, making it handy for families and snorkelers. The promenade is excellent for evening strolls, offering spectacular sunsets over the Gulf of Taranto. The low cliffs surrounding the bay also serve as natural diving boards into the refreshing blue water. Salentine gastronomy is a major highlight here: be sure to try 'pasticciotto' for breakfast or fresh seafood in the many waterfront restaurants. Santa Maria al Bagno is easily accessible from Lecce or Gallipoli by car or local bus. It is a place that perfectly combines relaxation, culture, and the authentic 'joie de vivre' of Southern Italy.
