💡 Tips
- Arrive very early (before 8 AM) in July and August to secure a good spot on the free beach areas, as it gets extremely crowded.
- There is very little natural shade on the beach, so bringing your own umbrella is essential if you don't rent one from a lido.
- The sea stays shallow for quite a distance from the shore, making it incredibly safe and convenient for families with small children.
- Parking options are mostly dirt lots or roadside; be prepared to pay a daily fee during the high season and carry small Euro bills.
- Cell phone reception can be spotty in some parts of the beach, so it's a great excuse to completely disconnect.
🍽 Food
Grab this traditional soft flatbread stuffed with local cheeses, meats, and vegetables from a food kiosk near the beach.
Don't miss this local shortcrust pastry filled with custard, available at pasticcerias in nearby Porto Cesareo or Torre Lapillo.
Look for trattorias slightly inland from the main beach roads for authentic dishes like spaghetti with sea urchins or mussels.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy Primitivo di Manduria wine and regional olive oil directly from nearby masserias (farmhouses) or small local shops.
You can buy sarongs, hats, and beach toys directly from the strolling vendors on the sand.
Take a short drive down the coast to this nature reserve, a peaceful spot behind the dunes where you might spot flamingos.
The beach empties out significantly after 6 PM, offering a much more tranquil experience as the sun goes down.
Water temperature…
Punta Prosciutto is one of the most celebrated coastal destinations in the Salento region of Apulia, southern Italy. Often compared to the Caribbean, this spectacular stretch of coastline is renowned for its shallow, crystal-clear turquoise waters and fine, incredibly white sand. It is part of the protected marine area of Porto Cesareo, ensuring that its natural beauty remains largely unspoiled and spirited with marine life. The main highlight is undeniably Lido Punta Prosciutto, alongside the expansive free beach areas. The water here deepens very gradually, making it an exceptionally safe and relaxing environment for families with young children or those who simply want to wade in the warm Ionian Sea. The backdrop of high sand dunes covered in lush Mediterranean scrub adds a wild, pristine feel to the landscape. Despite its immense popularity during peak summer, Punta Prosciutto maintains a laid-back charm. Visitors can find a mix of well-equipped beach clubs offering sunbeds and local cuisine, as well as vast stretches of untamed beach for a more natural experience. The local gastronomy features excellent Apulian seafood, olive oil, and regional wines, completing the great Italian beach holiday.
