Alatri is one of the most fascinating towns in Lazio, renowned for its monumental Acropolis and massive Cyclopean walls. These fortifications, constructed from giant limestone blocks without mortar, are among the best-preserved examples of ancient defensive architecture in Italy. The Acropolis of Alatri has a nearly well-suited polygonal shape and is dominated by the imposing Porta Maggiore, whose monolithic lintel weighs several tons. In antiquity, the city was a primary center of the Hernici people and retained its significance under Roman rule. At the heart of the Acropolis stands the Cathedral of San Paolo, built over the remains of an ancient temple and housing important relics, including the 'Miracle of the Incarnate Host.' Alatri's medieval center is characterized by Gothic palaces, such as Palazzo Gottifredo, and narrow, winding streets that reflect the town's rich history. Often called the 'City of the Cyclops,' Alatri continues to attract archaeologists and tourists from around the world.
