Procida is the most authentic of the three islands in the Gulf of Naples. While Capri is known for luxury and Ischia for wellness, Procida has preserved its charm as a fishing island. The island's most famous image is Marina Corricella, an amphitheater of pastel-colored houses stacked atop one another. Legend has it that the houses were painted different colors so fishermen could recognize their homes from far out at sea. Procida was Italy's Capital of Culture in 2022, highlighting the cultural significance of this small island. In the highest part of the island, Terra Murata, lies the historic core with Palazzo d'Avalos, a former prison, and the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo. The island is so small that it can be explored almost entirely on foot. Procida gained fame as a filming location for classics like 'The Postman' (Il Postino) and 'The Talented Mr. Ripley.' Local specialties include large, sweet Procida lemons, which are even used in salads.
