Nephin (Ireland)

Weather…

Nephin is an imposing, isolated mountain in County Mayo in western Ireland, reaching an elevation of 806 metres. It is the second-highest peak in the province of Connacht and forms the prominent eastern terminus of the Nephin Beg range. Geologically, the mountain is primarily composed of hard quartzite, which gives it its characteristic conical shape and pale, rocky slopes. Nephin dominates the landscape surrounding Lough Conn and is visible from a great distance. It is part of the Wild Nephin National Park, one of Ireland's largest wilderness areas, known for its pristine blanket bogs and dark night skies. The ascent to the summit is challenging and features, in clear weather, spectacular views extending to the Atlantic Ocean and the holy mountain of Croagh Patrick. Ecologically, the region is a vital habitat for rare mosses and lichens, as well as birds of prey. In Irish mythology and folklore, the mountain is frequently mentioned and served for centuries as a landmark for travellers in the rugged Mayo wilderness.
