Ballymote Castle (Ireland)

Weather…

Ballymote Castle in County Sligo is regarded as the last and most formidable Anglo-Norman fortress built in Connacht. It was constructed around 1300 by Richard de Burgh, the 'Red Earl' of Ulster, to secure a strategic pass leading into Sligo. The castle is architecturally significant for its nearly square enclosure which lacks a central keep; instead, its defense relied on massive circular corner towers and a powerful twin-towered gatehouse. Throughout the centuries, ownership of the castle shifted frequently between the De Burghs, the O'Connors, and the MacDonagh clan, underscoring its pivotal role in regional power struggles. During the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, the castle eventually surrendered to General Ireton's forces in 1652. The imposing ruins that stand today provide a vivid illustration of medieval military engineering and the immense wall thicknesses intended to withstand prolonged sieges. Despite the passage of time, Ballymote remains one of the most important historical landmarks in the west of Ireland.
