The castle features a large courtyard enclosed by high curtain walls with circular flanking towers and a central dwelling house that shows the transition from medieval defense to domestic comfort. Extensive restoration in the 1980s employed traditional craftsmanship, such as mortise and tenon oak timberwork and lime rendering, to return the castle to its former glory. Archaeological excavations within the bawn uncovered the remains of the 16th-century Gaelic tower, providing a link between the O'Rourke dynasty and the subsequent English administration. Today, the site functions as a heritage center where visitors can explore the smithy, the kitchen, and the strategic history of the Irish midlands.
