Ox Mountains (Ireland)

Weather…

The Ox Mountains, known in Irish as Slieve Gamph, are an ancient range in County Sligo, northwest Ireland. Geologically, they are among the oldest mountains in Ireland, composed of Precambrian gneiss and schist that date back over 600 million years. The highest peak is Knockalongy, standing at 544 metres. The range stretches for about 60 kilometres, forming a vast upland plateau characterized by blanket bogs and deep-cut valleys. The region is of significant ecological importance, providing a sanctuary for rare birds of prey such as the hen harrier. The River Moy, one of Ireland's premier salmon rivers, rises within these mountains. Historically, the area was famed for its dense forests, which were heavily harvested in the 18th and 19th centuries to supply timber for the British Royal Navy's shipbuilding. Today, the Ox Mountains offer a peaceful escape for hikers, with numerous trails winding through a rugged, untouched landscape. Scattered mountain lakes and ancient megalithic tombs testify to a long history of human habitation in the area. The range has expansive views over the Atlantic Ocean and the plains of Sligo, making it an under-the-radar destination for nature enthusiasts.
