Gunung Kawi Temple
Gunung Kawi is an awe-inspiring 11th-century temple and funerary complex positioned in the lush Pakerisan River valley of Bali. The site is famous for its ten massive rock-cut shrines, or candi, which are intricately carved directly into the towering cliff faces. These monuments are believed to be dedicated to the royalty of the Udayana Dynasty, serving as symbolic memorials for ancient kings and queens. To access the site, visitors must descend over 300 stone steps that wind through verdant jungle scenery and scenic terraced rice fields. The architectural style demonstrates a sophisticated blend of Indian Hindu influences and indigenous Balinese craftsmanship. In addition to the grand shrines, the area features numerous rock-hewn meditation cells used by monks in antiquity. Gunung Kawi remains one of Bali's oldest and most significant historical landmarks, providing profound insights into the island's medieval royal heritage.
