Komodo is more than just a name; it is a place that feels like it belongs to another era. As part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, the island is home to the legendary Komodo dragons, the world's largest living lizards. A visit here is strictly regulated and always conducted in the company of an experienced ranger, who ensures safety and provides fascinating insights into this unique ecosystem. The island's landscape is characterized by rugged, arid hills that contrast sharply with the deep blue sea. One of the absolute highlights is Pink Beach (Pantai Merah), one of only a few beaches in the world with naturally pink sand. This coloration is caused by microscopic red organisms living in the coral reefs that mix with the white sand. Snorkeling here is considered some of the best in Indonesia. The waters surrounding the island are renowned for their immense biodiversity. Strong currents bring nutrient-rich water that attracts giant manta rays, sharks, and countless colorful coral fish. It is a mecca for divers from around the globe. The island itself is sparsely populated, with Komodo Village being the only human settlement. The best time to visit is during the dry season from May to October, when the dragons are most active. A trip to Komodo is an encounter with prehistory and a powerful reminder of how spectacular and precious our planet's wilderness remains.
