Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest (Indonesia)

Weather…

The Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest is located in the Tabanan Regency of Bali and serves as a significant natural and cultural sanctuary. Spanning approximately 12 hectares, the area is covered by dense woodland, at the heart of which lies the sacred Pura Alas Kedaton temple. This temple is unique among Balinese shrines because it faces west, whereas most temples on the island are oriented toward the east or Mount Agung. The forest provides a habitat for a large colony of long-tailed macaques as well as an impressive population of flying foxes (fruit bats) that can be seen roosting in the treetops during the day. Local residents maintain a strong spiritual bond with the site and protect the animals, viewing them as guardians of the holy grounds. Compared to the more famous Ubud Monkey Forest, Alas Kedaton gives a more tranquil atmosphere and remains deeply rooted in Bali's rural character. An annual major temple ceremony is held here, during which no fire offerings are allowed in order to preserve the forest's harmony. The site stands as an important example of the integration of religious tradition and wildlife conservation.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season, typically running from May to September, features the most pleasant conditions for exploring the forest trails without the frequent heavy downpours that characterize Bali's wet season.
🌅
Best time of day
Late afternoon is an excellent time to visit, as the intense midday heat subsides, the macaques remain playful, and the resident fruit bats begin to stir overhead in the canopy before their nocturnal flights.
📜
Etiquette
Maintain a respectful distance from the macaques, avoiding direct eye contact or sudden movements, and never carry loose food, snacks, or easily snatchable items like sunglasses or shiny jewelry.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable walking sandals or shoes are handy for navigating the sometimes slippery forest paths, while a small, secure bag is recommended to keep all your personal belongings safely hidden from curious monkeys.
🧭
Getting there
Situated relatively close to the popular tourist hubs, the sanctuary is easily reachable by car or motorbike rental, and ample parking is typically available near the temple complex entrance.
🦌
What to expect
The macaques are highly accustomed to human presence and generally visible immediately, but observing the subtle social dynamics within the troops requires a slower, more deliberate walking pace through the grounds.
