Dinajpur is a historic city in the northernmost part of Bangladesh, renowned for its rich architectural heritage and agricultural excellence. One of its most famous landmarks is the Kantajew Temple, an 18th-century Hindu temple decorated with intricate terracotta plaques that depict scenes from ancient epics. The city is also home to Ramsagar, the largest man-made pond in Bangladesh, which was excavated by Raja Ram Nath in the mid-1700s to alleviate water shortages. Dinajpur is widely considered the litchi capital of the country, producing some of the sweetest and highest-quality varieties of the fruit, as well as aromatic Chini Gura rice. Historically, the region was ruled by the Rajas of Dinajpur, whose palace remains a significant historical site despite being in ruins. The district's economy is primarily based on agriculture, but it also hosts the Barapukuria coal mine, the country's first and largest underground coal mining operation.
