Vijayawada, often referred to as the business heart of Andhra Pradesh, is located on the banks of the Krishna River and flanked by the Indrakeeladri Hills. The city is famous for the Kanaka Durga Temple, one of the state's most visited religious sites, perched on a hilltop overlooking the urban landscape. An engineering highlight is the Prakasam Barrage, a structure over one kilometer long that regulates the Krishna River and feeds a vast irrigation network. Vijayawada has a long history dating back to the Vishnukundina dynasty and is now a significant commercial and transportation hub, serving as one of India's busiest railway junctions. Nearby are the ancient Undavalli cave temples, dating from the 4th to 5th centuries, carved directly into the rock face. Economically, the city benefits from the fertile agriculture of the river delta as well as a growing IT sector and logistics firms. As the gateway to the new state capital, Amaravati, Vijayawada plays a central role in the regional urban planning and economic transformation of southeastern India.
