Mahabalipuram (India)

Weather…

Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is an open-air museum of Dravidian architecture on the shores of the Bay of Bengal. Once a major port of the Pallava dynasty, the city today houses some of the most spectacular monolithic structures in the world. The Shore Temple, standing right on the water's edge, and the Five Rathas, five chariot-shaped temples carved each from a single massive rock, are world-class highlights. The skill of ancient stone carvers is nowhere more evident than in 'Arjuna's Penance', one of the largest open-air rock reliefs in the world. Another curious landmark is 'Krishna's Butter Ball', a massive granite boulder resting precariously on a slope, seemingly defying the laws of gravity. The entire town breathes history and art, making it an essential destination for anyone interested in cultural heritage. Local gastronomy provides a wonderful selection of fresh seafood and South Indian specialties. Many garden restaurants serve traditional curries on banana leaves, providing an authentic dining experience to the sound of crashing waves. The town is still a thriving hub for stone carving; you can hear the rhythmic tapping of chisels from workshops where artisans create statues for temples worldwide. Mahabalipuram is located about 60 kilometers south of Chennai and is easily accessible via the scenic East Coast Road. The best time to visit is between November and February when the weather is dry and pleasant. Every January, the Mamallapuram Dance Festival showcases classical dance forms against the impressive backdrop of the ancient monuments.
