Chikmagalur
Chikmagalur is a serene hill station famously known as the birthplace of coffee in India. In the 17th century, the first coffee beans in the country were planted here, and today it remains a premier coffee-growing region. The landscape is dominated by the Baba Budan Giri range and Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka, offering spectacular trekking opportunities and sweeping views of the Western Ghats. The region is also known for its beautiful waterfalls like Hebbe Falls and Jhari Falls, which are hidden deep within the forests. Chikmagalur is a top destination for 'homestays', allowing travelers to stay in colonial-style bungalows right in the middle of coffee estates. The cool, misty climate and the fragrance of coffee blossoms create a magical atmosphere for visitors. Local Malnad cuisine is a treat, featuring spicy dishes and, of course, the world-renowned South Indian filter coffee. The best time to visit is from September to March, when the greenery is at its most lively after the monsoon. Accessible by road from Bangalore, Chikmagalur features a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and coffee aficionados alike.
