Varkala
Varkala is the only place in southern Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea. These unique Cenozoic sedimentary formations, known as the Varkala Formation, provide a remarkable backdrop to Papanasam Beach. The waters here are considered sacred, and it is believed that a dip in them washes away all sins. The North Cliff is lined with animated cafes, yoga studios, and handicraft shops. The town is also a major pilgrimage site, home to the 2,000-year-old Janardhana Swami Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Another significant landmark is the Sivagiri Mutt, the final resting place of the social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. Natural mineral springs near the beach are prized for their medicinal properties and attract visitors seeking wellness. Adventurous travelers can enjoy paragliding from the cliffs or surfing in the blue waters. The town's laid-back vibe makes it a favorite for those looking for a mix of spirituality and coastal relaxation. The best time to visit is between October and March. Varkala has its own railway station, making it easily accessible from Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi.
