Reykholt (Iceland)

Weather…

Reykholt is one of Iceland's paramount cultural landmarks, forever associated with the legendary figure Snorri Sturluson. The preeminent poet, historian, and chieftain resided here during the 13th century, authoring seminal works such as Heimskringla and the Prose Edda. During his tenure, the estate functioned as a major political hub from which Snorri exerted immense influence over national affairs until his assassination in his own cellar in 1341. A remarkable feature of the site is Snorralaug, a geothermally heated bathing pool believed to be one of the oldest man-made structures in Iceland, originally connected to Snorri's house by a tunnel. Today, the village hosts Snorrastofa, a research center specialized in medieval studies and literature. The skyline is marked by two distinct churches: a historic wooden structure and a modern church completed in 1996, celebrated for its superb acoustics. Reykholt continues to serve as a vital center for the preservation of Icelandic cultural heritage.
