Pilis is a town in Pest County located about 50 kilometers southeast of Budapest, situated where the Gödöllő Hills meet the Great Hungarian Plain. It should be distinguished from the Pilis Mountains located north of the capital. The town's modern history was shaped in the early 18th century when the Beleznay family invited Slovak Lutheran settlers to repopulate the lands after the Ottoman wars. This migration made Pilis a significant center for the Evangelical Church in the region, and its large Lutheran church remains a dominant landmark. The town's architectural crown jewel is the Beleznay-Nyáry Mansion, a Baroque manor house once known for its extensive library and hosting prominent literary figures of the era. Economically, the town evolved from a strictly agricultural community to a strategic transit hub, thanks to its location along Main Road 4 and the Budapest-Szolnok railway line. Today, Pilis balances its role as a suburban residential area with a strong commitment to its dual Hungarian and Slovak heritage. The local museum and cultural programs frequently highlight the town's resettlement history and its traditional crafts, preserving a unique identity within the Budapest agglomeration.
