Reformed Great Church of Debrecen (Hungary)

Weather…

The Reformed Great Church of Debrecen is the iconic landmark of the city and the preeminent symbol of the Protestant faith in Hungary, earning the city the nickname 'the Calvinist Rome.' The current Neoclassical structure was built between 1805 and 1824 according to the designs of Mihály Péchy, replacing an earlier medieval church that was destroyed by fire. With a floor area of 1,500 square meters and a seating capacity for approximately 3,000 people, it stands as the largest Reformed church in the country. Its historical significance is immense; it was here on April 14, 1849, that Lajos Kossuth read the Declaration of Independence, announcing Hungary's separation from the Habsburg Dynasty. The church's prominent twin towers house the famous Rákóczi Bell, which weighs over 5 tons and is one of the largest bells in Hungary. The interior reflects the puritan simplicity of the Reformed tradition, featuring Kossuth's original chair and a monumental pipe organ. Today, the Great Church serves as an active place of worship and a museum showcasing the struggle for sovereignty.
