Biharugra Ponds (Hungary)

Weather…

The Biharugra Ponds in Békés County form the second largest artificial fishpond system in Hungary. They were established at the beginning of the 20th century in place of the former wetlands of the Körös region to economically utilize the vast floodplain areas. Today, the system covers around 1,900 hectares of water surface and is recognized as an internationally significant Ramsar site. Its ecological importance for bird migration is immense, as tens of thousands of wild geese and cranes rest here during their journeys. The area is part of the Körös-Maros National Park and hosts rare nesting species such as the White-tailed Eagle and the Black-crowned Night Heron. Besides its conservation function, extensive pond farming continues, contributing to the maintenance of the specific ecosystem. The region serves as a prime example of successful integration between land use and species protection in a man-made cultural landscape.
