Gyula Castle
Gyula Castle is the only intact lowland Gothic brick fortress in Central Europe and serves as a major landmark of Hungarian military history. Its construction began in the early 15th century, around 1405, under the orders of Ban János Maróti, and it was later owned by the prestigious Corvin family. Due to the scarcity of natural stone in the Great Hungarian Plain, the fortress was built using locally fired bricks, giving the structure its unique reddish color and characteristic architectural style. The castle's most famous historical event was the Ottoman siege of 1566, where captain László Kerecsényi and his men held the fortress for 63 days against an overwhelming Turkish force. Today, the castle functions as a museum featuring 24 exhibition rooms that showcase medieval life, from the knight's hall and chapel to the smithy and the dungeons. The surrounding castle gardens and lake provide a scenic setting for tourists and locals alike. Every summer, the castle courtyard hosts theatrical performances and historical reenactments, bringing the site's rich heritage to life. From the top of the watchtower, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the spa town of Gyula and the vast surrounding plains.
