Kat Hing Wai is a remarkably preserved walled village in Yuen Long, established over 400 years ago by the Tang clan during the Ming Dynasty. The village was built as a defensive stronghold, featuring thick blue-brick walls, watchtowers, and a moat to fend off pirates and rival clans. Its architectural layout is a near-excellent square, typical of traditional Hakka fortified settlements. A defining piece of its history is the story of the ornate iron gates, which were seized by British forces in 1899 following a local uprising and taken to Ireland. After decades of petitioning, the gates were finally returned in 1925, a momentous event in the village's history. Today, descendants of the original Tang settlers still reside within the narrow, historic alleys. Kat Hing Wai serves as a living museum, offering a rare glimpse into Hong Kong's pre-colonial clan culture amidst the surrounding modern high-rises.
