Fanling Wai stands as one of Hong Kong's most significant walled villages, serving for over 600 years as the ancestral home of the Pang clan in the New Territories. The village's layout is a classic example of Cantonese defensive architecture, characterized by its sturdy walls and a large pond at the front, which served both as a fish hatchery and a physical barrier against intruders. Historically, the pond and walls protected the residents from pirates and bandits that once roamed the coastal regions. A unique feature of Fanling Wai is the pair of ancient cannons situated at the entrance, which are among the few surviving examples of village defense artillery in Hong Kong. At the heart of the village lies the Pang Clan Ancestral Hall, a beautifully preserved structure where traditional rites and community gatherings still take place. Despite the encroaching modern high-rises of the Fanling New Town, the village maintains its historical integrity and provides a vivid window into the region's rich lineage-based social history.
