Tin Shui Wai is a meticulously planned new town in the northwestern part of Hong Kong's New Territories. Developed starting in the late 1980s, the town was built entirely on reclaimed land that was previously used for vast fish ponds (gei wai). It is characterized by its high-density residential towers and is divided into two phases of development, south and north. The town's transportation spine is the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, which efficiently connects residential estates with major transport hubs. At the heart of the community lies the 15-hectare Tin Shui Wai Park, providing essential open space and recreational facilities for residents. The town is most famous for its proximity to the Hong Kong Wetland Park, a world-class ecotourism facility that serves as a conservation area for birds and wetland wildlife. Tin Shui Wai represents a unique chapter in Hong Kong's urban expansion, showcasing how modern high-rise living can be integrated with large-scale environmental preservation projects in the surrounding rural landscape.
