Mei Foo is a prominent residential area in West Kowloon, best known for the sprawling Mei Foo Sun Chuen estate. Developed between 1968 and 1978, it stands as a landmark in Hong Kong's urban history, being one of the first and largest private housing projects ever built in the city. The estate consists of 99 residential towers, constructed on the reclaimed site of a former Mobil oil depot, which revolutionized middle-class living standards at the time. Its architectural layout followed the 'city within a city' concept, integrating essential services like schools, clinics, and shopping arcades directly into the residential blocks. One of the highlights of the area is the adjacent Lai Chi Kok Park, a vast green space that provides much-needed recreational facilities, including traditional Chinese gardens and sports grounds. Mei Foo is also a critical transport hub, featuring a major MTR interchange station that connects the Tsuen Wan and Tuen Ma lines. Today, it remains an animated community and a prime example of high-density urban planning that successfully balances residential needs with public amenities and excellent connectivity.
