Fan Lau Fort (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

Fan Lau Fort is the oldest known defensive fortification in Hong Kong, perched on the remote southwestern tip of Lantau Island. Established likely as early as 1729 during the Qing Dynasty, the fort was built to monitor the vital sea route to Guangzhou (Canton) and suppress the rampant piracy in the Pearl River Estuary. The rectangular fort, constructed from stone and brick, originally housed a small garrison and artillery pieces aimed at the channel below. Following the surrender of the region's most powerful pirate fleets in 1810, the fort's strategic importance waned, and it was eventually abandoned to the elements. It was rediscovered as a heritage site and underwent significant restoration in the 1980s. Accessible via the scenic Lantau Trail, the fort today provides history enthusiasts a glimpse into imperial China's coastal defenses while providing dramatic views over the South China Sea.
