Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau Marine Park (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

Established in November 1996, the Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau Marine Park covers approximately 1,200 hectares of water in the western reaches of Hong Kong. The protected area encompasses the islands of Sha Chau, Lung Kwu Chau, and Pak Chau (Tree Island). This marine park is a critical sanctuary for the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, commonly known as the Chinese White Dolphin. The nutrient-rich waters near the Pearl River Estuary provide an abundant supply of fish, making it a good foraging ground. To protect the dolphin population, the park enforces strict maritime regulations, including vessel speed limits and controlled fishing activities. The seabed consists mainly of sand and mud, supporting a variety of benthic organisms that are vital to the marine food chain. Beyond its ecological role, the park serves as an important site for long-term monitoring and conservation research regarding Hong Kong's marine mammal populations.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time to observe Chinese White Dolphins is from November to April, when water visibility is at its best. In the summer months, dolphins are still present, but high humidity and heat can make conditions more challenging.
🌅
Best time of day
Dolphins are most active early in the morning and late afternoon, when they hunt in shallow waters. Avoid midday hours, as the animals are often resting and the harsh sunlight reduces visibility.
📜
Etiquette
Boats must maintain a minimum distance of 100 meters from the dolphins - never chase or encircle the animals. It is forbidden to jump into the water or feed the dolphins; noise pollution should also be avoided.
🎒
What to bring
High-magnification binoculars (e.g., 10x42) are useful for spotting dolphins at a distance. For boat trips, bring sunscreen, a hat, and a waterproof jacket, as waves can cause splashing.
🧭
Getting there
The marine park lies in Hong Kong's western waters and is only accessible by boat. Organized tours often depart from Tuen Mun or Lantau Island; private boats require a permit from the park authority.
🦌
What to expect
Dolphins are wild animals and sightings are never guaranteed - be prepared to spend several hours on the water. Focus on the water surface and look for bubble trails or dorsal fins breaking the surface.
