Ping Shan is a historic area in Hong Kong's New Territories, renowned for the Tang clan settlements dating back to the 12th century. The Ping Shan Heritage Trail, inaugurated in 1993, showcases over 20 traditional Chinese structures, including the Kun Ting Study Hall (built 1870) and the Tang Ancestral Hall (built 1851). The villages of Hang Mei Tsuen and Hang Tau Tsuen form the core of the clan's territory, featuring Hakka-style architecture with grey brick walls and blue-tiled roofs. The 18th-century Ping Shan Tower, standing 13 meters tall, was used for defense against pirates. The area also includes the Sheung Cheung Wai, a walled village with a moat. Ping Shan provides a rare glimpse into Hong Kong's rural heritage and the patriarchal clan system that shaped its early settlements.
