Enmore Sugar Fields (Guyana)

Weather…

Located on the East Coast of Demerara, Enmore is historically intertwined with Guyana's sugar industry. The Enmore sugar estates were for decades a central component of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), shaping the economic development of the entire region. The vast sugarcane fields are irrigated by a sophisticated canal system, originally laid out in the 18th and 19th centuries by Dutch and British colonists. Enmore is also a site of great national significance, as it was the location of the 1948 sugar workers' strike that led to the shooting of the five 'Enmore Martyrs', an event that profoundly influenced Guyana's labor movement. The fields are traditionally prepared by burning before harvest, followed by manual or mechanical cutting of the cane. Although sugar production has undergone structural changes in recent years, Enmore remains a symbol of colonial plantation history and the country's industrial evolution.
