Enmore is a historically significant settlement in the Demerara-Mahaica region of Guyana, located approximately 25 kilometers east of the capital, Georgetown. The village is inextricably linked to the history of sugar cane plantations and the labor movement's struggle for dignity and fair wages. Enmore gained international prominence following the tragic events of June 16, 1948, when five sugar workers, now revered as the Enmore Martyrs, were fatally shot by colonial police during a strike. This incident is widely regarded as a pivotal turning point in Guyanese political history, acting as a catalyst for the country's push toward independence and the formation of modern political parties. Beyond its political legacy, Enmore was for decades a hub of industrial sugar production, with its large estate factory serving as the regional economic engine. The community today is predominantly composed of descendants of Indian indentured laborers, preserving a rich cultural and religious heritage. Despite shifts in the sugar industry, the memory of the martyrs remains a cornerstone of local and national identity.
