Victoria is a coastal village in Guyana of immense historical significance, standing as the first settlement in the country to be purchased by freed Africans following the abolition of slavery. In November 1839, a group of eighty-three former slaves from five nearby estates pooled their meager savings to buy the abandoned Plantation Northbrook for 30,000 guilders. They famously transported the payment in coins via wheelbarrows to the city and renamed the settlement Victoria in honor of the reigning British monarch. This act of self-determination led to the creation of a unique system of local governance, with a code of management that predated official local government laws in the colony. The founders established strict community guidelines and revitalized the land for agriculture, specifically the production of cassava bread, which remains a staple of the local economy to this day. Victoria is regarded as the cradle of the Guyanese village movement, symbolizing the transition from plantation labor to independent community living. Residents today take great pride in this heritage, celebrating their history through annual festivals and the preservation of traditional crafts.
